So Ask Him

From: New Life Daily Devotional - Steve Arterburn

Matthew 11:29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

We live in a fast-paced, stress-inducing, anxiety-filled world that oftentimes seems to shift beneath our feet. The idea that the pace of life seems to continually increase stress and worry is a universal concept. Sometimes, trusting God is difficult, especially when we become caught up in the incessant demands of an anxious world. Are you tired of the rat race?

When you feel stressed to the breaking point—and you will—return your thoughts to God’s love and God’s promises. And as you confront the challenges of everyday living, turn all of your concerns over to your Heavenly Father.

God doesn’t always take us out of life’s demanding situations. Instead, He invites us to allow Him to help us handle the demands. He wants to face each day and each challenge with us. Walking with Jesus Christ daily and trusting Him for guidance and wisdom to handle whatever comes, is the way to experience rest in the rat race.

The same God who created the universe will comfort and guide you if you ask Him . . . so ask Him. Then watch in amazement as your anxieties melt into the warmth of His loving hands.

Keep On Walking

From: Freedom In Christ Ministries - Neil Anderson

Isaiah 50:10 "Who is among you that fears the Lord, that obeys the voice of His servant, that walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God."

My family and I have been through two extremely dark periods in our life. There were days I wasn't sure if we were going to make it. If it wasn't for the message of Isaiah 50:10, I'm not sure we would have survived spiritually. Isaiah is asking if there is a believer, somebody who fears the Lord, walking in darkness. He is not referring to the darkness of sin or even the darkness of this world. He is talking about the darkness of uncertainty--that blanket of heaviness that settles in as though a black cloud has drifted over our very being. God has suspended His conscious blessings.

What is a person to do during these times? Isaiah tells us that no matter how dark it gets, we are to keep on walking. In the light we can see the next step. The path ahead is clear. We know a friend from an enemy and we can see where the obstacles are. But when darkness settles in, every natural instinct says to drop out, sit down, stop! We become fearful of the next step.

Isaiah says don't stop; keep on walking. Keep walking in the light of previous revelation.

If God's ministry of darkness should envelop you, understand that God has not left you; He has only suspended His conscious presence so that your faith will not rest on feelings or be established by unique experiences or blessings. Listen to Isaiah's advice: Keep on walking. Never doubt in the darkness what God has clearly shown you in the light.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for guiding me through the darkness of my trials with the light of Your truth.

Trust God...His Way Is Perfect

From: New Life Daily Devotional - Steve Arterburn

Psalm 18:30 "As for God, His way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection."

What do you expect from the day ahead? Are you willing to trust God completely, or are you living beneath a cloud of doubt and fear? God’s Word makes it clear: you should trust Him and His promises, and when you do, you can live courageously.

For thoughtful Christians, every day begins and ends with God’s Son and God’s promises. When we accept Christ into our hearts, God promises us the opportunity for earthly peace and spiritual abundance. But more importantly, God promises us the priceless gift of eternal life.

Sometimes, especially when we find ourselves caught in the inevitable entanglements of life, we fail to trust God completely.

Are you tired? Discouraged? Fearful? Be comforted and trust the promises that God has made to you.

Are you worried or stressed? Be confident in God’s power.

Do you see a difficult future ahead? Be courageous and call upon God. He will protect you and then use you according to His purposes.

Are you confused? Listen to the quiet voice of your Heavenly Father. He is not a God of confusion. Talk with Him; listen to Him; trust Him, and trust His promises. He is steadfast, and He is your Protector . . . forever.

Perseverance...Not Perfection

From: New Life Daily Devotional - Steve Arterburn

Proverbs 24:16 "For a righteous man may fall seven times...and rise again."

The occasional disappointments and failures of life are inevitable. Such setbacks are simply the price that we must occasionally pay for our willingness to take risks as we follow our dreams. But even when we encounter bitter disappointments, we must never lose faith.

The reassuring words of Hebrews 10:36 remind us that when we persevere, we will eventually receive that which God has promised. What’s required is perseverance, not perfection.

When we encounter the inevitable difficulties and stresses of life here on earth, God stands ready to protect us. Our responsibility, of course, is to ask Him for protection. When we call upon Him in heartfelt prayer, He will answer—in His own time and according to His own plan—and He will heal us. And, while we are waiting for God’s plans to unfold and for His healing touch to restore us, we can be comforted in the knowledge that our Creator can overcome any obstacle, even if we cannot.

So you have failed? You have not failed; you have gained experience. Go forward!

We Are Role Models

From: Our Daily Bread - David McCasland

Philippians 2:14-15 "Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault."

During a summer of international sports scandals involving gambling and substance abuse, two athletes were applauded for their character as much as their professional accomplishments. A record crowd of 75,000 cheered Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn during their 2007 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. “Whether we like it or not,” Ripken said, “as big leaguers, we are role models. The only question is, will it be positive or will it be negative?”

Gwynn echoed the sentiment: “There’s more than just playing the game of baseball... You’re responsible, you’ve got to make good decisions and show people how things are supposed to be done.”

Every day, people are watching us. Compromise causes others to become disillusioned, while character fosters hope. As the life of our Savior flows out from us, we can encourage others and point them to Him.

What kind of role model will we be for someone watching today?

Morning Always Comes

From: The Word For Today - Bob Gass Ministries

Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be brave and steadfast; have no fear or dread of them, for it is the Lord, your God, who marches with you; He will never fail you or forsake you."

God can bring you through situations you think you won't survive, or feel you'll be stuck in forever. He can make you comfortable in the most uncomfortable places, and give you peace in the midst of trauma. Before your life is over you'll live, love, and experience loss.

Losing some things will actually help you to appreciate the things you still have. It's the taste of failure that makes success sweet. You'll live each day not knowing what tomorrow holds, but confident that God has your tomorrows all planned out. They're not in the hands of your boss or your banker or your mate or anybody else. Nor are they in your own hands to manipulate and control. No, all your tomorrows are in God's hands.

Just because you don't recognize the path you're on doesn't mean that God's not leading you. He'll be there when everybody and everything else has failed you. He'll be there for you in the dark places. "… Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Psalm 30:5).

However long the night, morning always comes, and with it His joy. As you look back you'll realize that His grace protected you, provided for you, secured you, calmed you, comforted you and brought you through. Times and seasons change, but not God. He's always "the God of all comfort."

Confidence Restored

From: New Life Daily Devotional

James 4:8 "Draw close to God and He will draw close to you."

Are you a confident, faithful believer, or do you live under a cloud of uncertainty and doubt? As a Christian, you have many reasons to be confident. After all, God is in His heaven; Christ has risen; and you are the recipient of God’s grace. Despite these blessings, you may, from time to time, find yourself being tormented by stressful, destructive emotions—and you are certainly not alone.

During turbulent times like these, even the most faithful Christians are overcome by occasional bouts of fear and doubt. And you are no different. But even when you feel very distant from God, remember that God is never distant from you. When you sincerely seek His presence, He will touch your heart, calm your fears, and restore your confidence.

Jesus gives us the ultimate rest, the confidence we need, to escape the frustration and chaos of the world around us. Billy Graham

Pressure

From: Bryant Wright Ministries

John 16:33 "I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world."

People today live pressure-filled lives and it’s taking its toll. Dr. Joel Elkes says, “Our mode of life—the way we live—is emerging as today’s main cause of illness.” The American Academy of Family Physicians says that two-thirds of all visits to doctors are stress related, and that stress is now known as the major contributor to heart disease, cancer, accidental injuries, and suicide.”

People attend stress seminars and devour books on stress. Sometimes they find that just focusing on it makes them more uptight. But, let’s face it - stress and pressure are a part of life.

Even Jesus Christ promised us that we’ll all face it. He said, “In this world you’ll face much tribulation.” Tribulation also means pressure. He goes on to say, “…but take heart. I have overcome the world.” Jesus does not promise us freedom from pressure, but He does promise us peace amidst the stress. Inner peace is a by-product of knowing Christ as Savior and Lord. The good news is, it’s available to all who trust in Him.

Yes, pressure is a part of life, but Christ gives us peace amidst the pressure. And that’s not a bad way to live!

Your Motive Is The key

From: Bryant Wright Ministries

James 4:3 “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives…”

You’ll find little argument from people about the importance of prayer. Most people pray. Everyone needs it. But the reality is, prayer is often disappointing. We don’t get the results we desire. Let me share with you why: It’s found in the Bible, in the book of James. “You ask and do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives.”

Prayer is not so much about asking God for what we want. It’s about finding out what He wants and finding the strength to do it. Selfish prayers disappoint. Prayers to get to know God, to find strength and to do His will, bring tremendous results—sometimes even supernatural results. This kind of praying is powerful because you get plugged into the ultimate power source—the God of the universe.

How’s your prayer life? Fulfilling or disappointing? Remember your motive, for your heart is the key. Why don’t you take a moment right now and talk with God for the purpose of seeking His will. You’ll be pleased with the results!

Behind The Building

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries - Dave Branon

1 Corinthians 15:58 "Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."

Where we were working was hot, dirty, and it smelled bad. We had traveled thousands of miles to do some work projects, and on this day we were painting the back of a classroom building at a school for the deaf. The only people who would ever see this part of the building would be the guy who cut the grass and any unfortunate person who would have to work on the septic pit.

Yet, as the young adults diligently painted away, one of the girls, Melissa, put it in perspective by saying, “Nobody will ever come back here to see this, but God will see it. So let’s make it look nice.” And so we did.

Sometimes we sit at our desk and think no one sees our work. Or we stand at a line assembling item after endless item. Perhaps we take care of crying babies in the church nursery. Or we live the best Christian life we can—without anyone noticing.

Often our work is “behind the building.” But if that is what God has called us to do, we need to work with all our heart. As part of our calling to love others deeply, offer hospitality, and use our gifts to serve others, our task is to work with God’s strength to bring praise and glory to God, not ourselves. The important thing is that God likes what He sees.

Take A Deep Breath And Relax

From: Powerpoint Daily Devotional Ministries

Job 42:2 "I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be hindered."

Does your life feel like it’s falling apart at times? Maybe even today it seems as if the world is crumbling around you.

If so, let’s take a moment to think about the life and living hope that we have because of Jesus, the chief Cornerstone. We’ve been given a life of purpose and significance.

In this life, we are no longer alone or isolated or living independently of God. We have been loved unconditionally and accepted into God’s family. Which means we should live without fear of the future because we have this hope in Christ! He is sufficient for every hurt, for every habit, for every challenge and test in life.

Maybe you are wondering today why your life doesn’t seem to fit together… why things aren’t working out the way you had planned. If you’re trying to build your life without Jesus, everything will ultimately fall apart. But if Jesus is the Cornerstone set in your life, you can be assured that His purpose will be fulfilled in you.

Take a deep breath and relax.

Speak Without Fear

From: Daily Disciples Ministries

Acts 18:9-10 "Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city."

I am encouraged when reading statements like these. Paul was known as a man with such boldness and never-ending endurance. He spoke before kings and started churches. He was persecuted and beaten but continued to sing praises. We read that his body had the brand marks of Jesus Christ and yet, this verse allows us to look into his heart. Paul was scared.

I would guess that not many people would know that Paul needed this kind of encouragement. Paul obviously knew that his fears stemmed from his speaking, which led to him being attacked and hurt. God knew what Paul needed to keep going. The Lord assured Paul to continue, to not quit, but to speak, and then calmed his fears by saying that no one would attack him to hurt him.

God knows just what we need to hear. God knows just how much each of us can take. And God knows how to assure us, comfort us, encourage us and motivate us to continue. Are there fears you are dealing with today?

Are you struggling with thoughts of quitting or stopping? God knows your heart and He can minister to you at the deepest level. Allow His Holy Spirit to minister to you today. Open His Word and listen as He speaks to your heart. Then, go and speak as He leads you.

Don't Let Discouragement Win

From: In Touch Ministries

James 1:2-4 "My brothers, count it pure joy when you are involved in every sort of trial. Realize that when your faith is tested this makes for endurance. Let endurance come to its perfection so that you may be fully mature and lacking in nothing."

Discouragement is one of Satan’s most effective weapons; he knows that if he can destroy our courage, we’ll be ineffective in accomplishing anything for Christ.

One mark of discouragement is a divided mind. This underlying distraction affects every area and decision. No matter what you’re doing, it feels as if a dark cloud covers your entire thought life.

Discouragement also leads to the “blame game,” where we feel a deep inner need to point a finger at someone else. You may want to find fault with God because He has allowed painful circumstances in your life, or you may accuse others because of the way they treat you. Perhaps you yourself feel guilty for poor choices or past mistakes. Blame is an empty activity. No healing or restoration ever came from trying to pin responsibility on someone else for the hardships in your life.

Anger is another common indication that one is discouraged. When this occurs, bitterness may develop into a spirit of vengeance and finally retaliation. If you let anger grow and fester without resolution, it easily mutates into depression. In this, resentment acts like a cancer that slowly spreads and destroys your entire life.

The traits described above aren’t what one would expect of a Christ-follower, are they? Ask the Father to search your heart for any trace of these destructive seeds, and to short-circuit the work of discouragement in your life.

Great Leadership

From: Bryant Wright Ministries

Joshua 1:9 “I command you: be strong and courageous. Do not fear; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Obviously, leaders make things happen; they bring about change. Leaders also:

• Clearly communicate what they stand for—what their goals are. They have clear direction.

• Have an ability to motivate others to do what they want them to do. People want to follow leaders. Sometimes this is for good, sometimes it is for evil.

• Delegate. They trust in others to get the job done. They know that consistently micromanaging destroys the morale of those they are called to lead.

All these are key traits of leadership, but what separates leaders from great leaders? I believe that it’s courage - the courage to do what’s right and to do what needs to be done—especially when the heat is on, people are grumbling, and times are hard.

Great leaders have the courage to lead others to carry out their vision no matter how hard the course. This courage can be found in the Lord.

Everybody is a leader at some point in their life...at home, at work, or in the Church.

Pay Attention And Be Careful

From: Wisdom From The Psalms

Psalm 119:105,112 "A lamp to my feet is Your Word. I intend in my heart to fulfill Your statutes, always to the letter."

Roger was the best cop in the precinct. His record was sparkling clean, and he was the model for most rookies to follow. His most frequent piece of advice was simple: Pay attention. Roger had watched a lot of his friends blow it, just because they got careless.

Police work was not for careless people. Bad things happened to careless people; things that couldn't be undone. The best way to be was careful. The last thing Roger wanted to have happen was for his career, or his life, to come to an end over some stupid mistake.

One of the best ways we can honor our Lord is to pay attention and be careful. Other people see the way we live our lives, and if we are sloppy and sinful, we can hardly hope to make others see the benefits of being Christian. Once we have been touched by the saving grace of God, we need to pay attention and live as careful a life a possible.

Prayer: Make me a good example, Lord, of a life made new through Your love. Help others to see in me that Your way is the best way. Amen.

Are You Struggling Today?

From: Powerpoint Daily Devotional - Jack Graham

1 Peter 5:10 "And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you."

God never tells us that we won’t experience grief or sorrow in this life. There will be tears. And, to be honest, sometimes life will just suck the air right out of you.

But we must remember that trials do have a purpose. Trials can fortify us. They can prove us, test us, and prepare us.

The fact is, if you’re a Christian, you’re in a spiritual battle. Which means you have a very real enemy. And trials prepare you for this battle and make you stronger. In fact, you may be going through a spiritual boot camp of sorts today, which is preparing you for the battle ahead!

Think about it this way. When gold is made, all the impurities must be removed. The same process of refining takes place in our lives before genuine gold can come forth.

Whatever you may be facing today, keep in mind that God is forming your character, bringing out the gold in you. Everything has a reason. You may not see it… you may not understand it… but God is working in your life.

Remember that no matter what you may be going through, you can build your life on the certainty and confident expectation that God is in the midst of it. Rejoice because He is working in your life and your future!

We Are Never Without Hope

From: Powerpoint Daily Devotions - Jack Graham

John 16:33 "I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world."

In these troubling times, have you ever wondered if we can really be hopeful about the future? I want to assure you that it is possible to live with hope, despite what may be going on around us.

Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ we have hope. It’s because He lives that hope can reside in your heart if you’re a Christian.

And because of that, there is no need to fear the future! If you are a child of God, you are chosen and called by Him. You’re not an accident, an afterthought, or a mistake. You have been in the heart and mind of God forever, and He has already been planning and preparing your future.

In fact, God knows the end from the beginning… and everything else in your life. That’s comforting when we face tough times and when we’re tempted to give up. It’s encouraging to know that we are never, ever without hope!

So today, if you’re tempted to give up on your marriage, don’t! If you’re thinking about giving up on your kids, don’t! If you want to give up on your dreams… or even life itself… don’t!

Remember that you have a living hope that is working in your past, your present, and your future. And as the Scripture teaches us in Romans chapter 5, that hope does not disappoint!

A Balancing Act

From: New Life Daily Devotional - Steve Arterburn

Proverbs 19:8 "Grow a wise heart—you’ll do yourself a favor; keep a clear head—you’ll find a good life."

Face facts: life is a delicate balancing act, a tightrope walk with over-commitment on one side and under-commitment on the other. And it’s up to each of us to walk carefully on that rope, not falling prey to pride (which causes us to attempt too much) or to fear (which causes us to attempt too little).

God’s Word promises us the possibility of abundance (John 10:10). And we are far more likely to experience that abundance when we lead balanced lives.

Are you doing too much—or too little? If so, it’s time to have a little chat with God. And if you listen carefully to His instructions, you will strive to achieve a more balanced life, a life that’s right for you and your loved ones. When you do, everybody wins.

Does God care about all the responsibilities we have to juggle in our daily lives? Of course. But He cares more that our lives demonstrate balance, the ability to discern what is essential and give ourselves fully to it.

Happiness

From: Bryant Wright Ministries

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson tells us that all men are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” One thing’s for sure, Americans have been pursuing happiness ever since and with a passion!

However, I have bad news. If the pursuit of happiness is your primary goal, you’ll never find it. Happiness is a by-product of being in God’s will and making the most of your gifts and talents. The pursuit of happiness is a selfish thing and selfishness never leads to happiness.

Instead:
• Get to know God personally and begin to do His will.
• Live in a right relationship with Him and your fellow man.

Develop the gifts and abilities He’s given you for His glory and for service to your fellow man. In the process, you may discover happiness. But pursuing happiness, well, you’ll never find it that way. Pursue God in Christ and happiness results.

Rejoice In Plenty And In Want

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries - Dennis Fisher

Job 2:10 “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?”

When my wife accepted a position as Director of Special Education in a school district many miles from our home, it resulted in a very long commute each day. It was tolerable in the short term, but neither of us could see her doing this indefinitely. So we decided to relocate to another city halfway between our two jobs.

The real estate agent was not optimistic about our home selling quickly. Market trends showed many homes for sale with few buyers. After much prayer and strenuous cleaning, we finally put our home up for sale. To our surprise, our house sold in less than 3 weeks!

Sometimes I feel guilty about receiving material blessings. With so many needs around the world, why should I expect divine intervention in selling a home? Then I remember Job’s reply to his wife: “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?”

This verse is most often applied to accepting disappointment. But the principle also applies to being grateful for blessings. The apostle Paul had learned how to rejoice in plenty and in want (Phil. 4:10-13).

God has an interest in teaching us contentment through both gains and losses. Thanking God in all circumstances recognizes His sovereignty and nurtures a response of faith.

Glorify God With Your Gifts

From: The Purpose Driven Life Ministries

1 Corinthians 7:17 “Each of you should go on living according to the Lord’s gift to you, and as you were when God called you. This is the rule I teach in all the churches.”

God does not expect you to glorify Him with gifts you don’t have. But He does expect you to glorify Him with gifts you do have.

To fulfill God’s will for you life, you need work that expresses what God made you to be. If you’re in a job that is not using the talents, gifts, abilities, and interests that God gave you, you may want to pray about whether or not you’re in a mismatched job.

This is a serious problem and it’s a spiritual issue. It is far more important than you may think it is because God has given you your gifts, talents, and abilities, and one day He’s going to say, “What did you do with them?” And do you want to say, “Well, I spent my life at a job that didn’t use them”?

It’s a very important issue for your spiritual life: Get into what God made you to be. The first step you need to take is some self-appraisal. You need to ask yourself, “What did God make me to be?” As the Bible says, “Try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you” (Romans 12:3). During this appraisal, you may even discover that you are in the very job God wants you to be, and you can develop a new attitude about your work.“

Each of you should go on living according to the Lord’s gift to you.” Pray about this: Are you in a job that doesn’t match who God made you to be, or are you exactly where God wants you to be?
