Matthew 14:27 "Jesus hastened to reassure them: 'Get hold of yourselves! It is I. Do not be afraid!'"
No one gets through life without trials. Realistically, you are either in a storm, just getting out of a one, or about to enter a turbulent time. That is the bad news. Thankfully, we serve a good God who provides beautifully—especially during the dark periods of life.
Today's passage tells of a stormy night on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus provides for us today just as He did for His disciples in that unsettling situation. Today, we will focus on ways that He does this.
First, the Father gives Christians His presence and the promise that He will never leave (Heb. 13:5-6). This is, perhaps, the greatest gift because from this awareness, He offers a sense of comfort, courage, and confidence.
Second, the Lord blesses His children with a pathway through trouble. He is in total control of our storm and will use the trial for His purpose. We may not understand, but we can trust His hand to guide us and accomplish good. Sometimes the reason and benefit of a difficulty will becomes obvious, while in other cases, it may never be clear.
Third, the Father offers believers the potential to grow. Hardships are exercises in trust and times to learn more fully who God is and how great His power and love are.
No one enjoys trials, but hardships are chances to trust your Creator and to know Him better.

When You Get Knocked Down, Get Up
From: The Word For Today - Bob Gass
Joshua 1:9 "I command you: be firm and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go."
Tom Monaghan started Domino's Pizza in 1960 with one little shop. He struggled for eight years. When his shop burned to the ground, the insurance company paid him only one cent on the dollar to cover his losses. All he knew was pizza, so he started another shop. He worked 100 hours a week. Up to this point he had only taken one week-long holiday - for his honeymoon.
By 1971 he was $1.5million in debt. But he stayed in his field, which was the pizza business, and tried something new. He limited his menu to pizza only, and decided to deliver it hot and fresh to customers at no extra charge. It worked. By 2007, Domino's Pizza had grown to 6100 stores across the United States and other countries. Today he's one of the richest men in the nation, and he gives most of his profits to charity.
What was his secret? He started where he was. He fought for what he believed to be his God-given purpose. And when he got knocked down he got back up.

Passions And Strengths
From: Boyd Bailey Ministries
Romans 12:6 "We have gifts that differ according to the favor bestowed on each of us."
Know and understand your strengths, for it is best to behave how God created you. By God’s grace, He places within you the gifts to carry out His plan. This is called your core competency. You may be a gifted leader, so lead. You may be a gifted coach, so coach. You may be a gifted counselor, so counsel. You may be a gifted administrator, so administer.
You may be a gifted writer, so write. You may be a gifted servant, so serve. You may be a gifted artist, so create. You may be a gifted communicator, so communicate. There is a long menu of gifts, and you probably resemble several of them. Study your gifts, and you will discover your strengths.
Become comfortable with and accept the one thing you do naturally. It is effortless because God has engineered you for this. He gave you the skills and abilities to innovate, create, and produce these desired outcomes. However, make sure you do not confuse passion with strength. If you have the passion to speak, it is imperative you at least have the raw skill for speaking. Many of the technicalities of communication can be learned, but don’t try to make yourself become someone you’re not.
Synergy for life and work come as you align passions and strengths. Take the time to understand what you do best and where you have the most energy, and then position your responsibilities at home and work to mirror that ideal. Do not be afraid to change and try new things. Ask others to validate what you do best. Ask those who know you well to affirm where they see your passion protrude. Then, prayerfully align around both.
Be who God has made you to be!

As You Practice, So You Play
From: Bryant Wright Ministries
James 4:8 "Draw close to God and He will draw close to you."
Football coaches have a saying about preparing for the big game. As you practice, so you play. It works the same way in our spiritual lives. Regular time alone with God is how we practice staying close to God each day. And certainly if we're going to have meaningful, weekly worship with other believers, it's always more meaningful when we've spent time alone with God.
Have you ever been to a worship service that just seemed to fall flat? Maybe you thought your pastor let you down and gave a sermon that was just plain boring! Or maybe the music didn't connect or wasn't the style you were in the mood for that day. Some days things just don't connect and you think, "Well, there's an hour of my life I'll never get back."
Maybe it's just a little too easy to blame the worship leaders for a flat experience. When a weekly service disappoints, it might be because you haven't been in practice all week. As you practice, so you play the game. You'll be amazed how much anticipation there is for weekly worship if you have regular time alone with God.

With God Timing Is Everything
From: Powerpoint Daily Devotionals - Jack Graham
Romans 8:18 "I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us."
The great basketball coach, John Wooden, who passed away fairly recently at almost 100 years of age, wrote a book called, Be Quick, Don't Hurry. He was talking about basketball of course, saying be quick, but don't rush because that's when mistakes happen.
That's good advice for us today regarding life in general. You see, with God time means nothing, but timing with God is everything!
You may be struggling today wondering when your struggles will ever end. But with God, your suffering is only temporary and your future is filled with eternal hope.
Trust God's timing and the masterful hand of Providence in your life. Your struggles today cannot compare to the glorious promise that is yours in Christ Jesus.

No Surprise To God
From: Joel Osteen Ministries
Matthew 5:45 "... The rain falls on the just and the unjust."
In life, we all have to deal with the unexpected. Just because we're believers, just because we're good people or doing the right thing doesn't make us exempt from trouble. The scripture says, "The rain falls on the just and the unjust."
In times when something unexpected happens, or you find yourself facing a crisis, you don't have to go into "panic mode" or fall apart emotionally. Remember, that crisis is no surprise to God. It may be unexpected to you, but God knows the end from the beginning. He has solutions to problems that you haven't even had. He has equipped you for every battle, and He goes before you making your crooked places straight.
Today, focus on the fact that He is with you. Remember that He is walking with you and guiding you to a place of peace and victory. No matter what has happened, He will take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it around for your good! He always leads us in victory, so keep moving forward trusting in the good plan He has for you!

Matthew 5:4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
Are you mourning today? When you lose someone who is close to you, you don't get over it like people want you to—especially if that loved one was a child. You never plan for such a thing. So I mourn every single day. Yet Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." There is a blessedness, or happiness, in mourning.
Some good things can come out of mourning. One is that you gain a new perspective. You see things differently. Some of the things that were important to you before are not nearly as important to you now. And some of the things that were not as important to you before become very important to you now.
You get a different view of life and find yourself longing for heaven more. Before my son went to be with the Lord, I thought about heaven. But to me it was a lot more intangible than it is today. I think more specifically about heaven now because someone so close to me is there. So you long more for heaven. And you find yourself drawing close to God because, quite frankly, there is nowhere else to go.

Creativity And Innovation
From: Today God Is First - Os Hillman
Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
"The concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn better than a 'C,' the idea must be feasible." Those were the words of a Yale University management professor in response to Fred Smith's paper proposing reliable overnight delivery service. Smith went on to found Federal Express Corp. which is the number one overnight delivery service in the world with 260,000 employees. Founder, Fred Smith, is synonymous with the word "innovation."
There have been many great innovators who have turned concepts into successful companies. Walt Disney said, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
God is the source of all creativity and innovation. He created the world in seven days. He has made you to create. If God has placed an idea in your heart to do, ask the Lord for His help in bringing it to reality. He desires to see His people create new things that can serve mankind and bring glory to God. Henry Ford once said, "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right."
Faith plays an important role when considering stepping out to launch a new endeavor. "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for." (Heb 11:1-2).
Perhaps you've failed in the past and you're afraid to step out again. Most successful entrepreneurs failed several times before they were successful. Don't let fear of failure keep you from success.
You were made to create. You were made to succeed.

Spiritual Nourishment
From: Ron Smith Ministries
Matthew 4:4 "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
Just like our physical body needs physical nourishment, so the spiritual part of us needs spiritual nourishment! We eat from the various food groups in order to maintain our balanced physical well-being. So it is with our spiritual nature. What we feed our spirit affects our spiritual health!
Our physical nourishment enters our body through our mouth. We chew our food, swallow it, and our stomach and intestines squeeze out every bit of nourishment it can and then send it by the blood stream to every part of our body.
Our body will process and absorb whatever we feed it! If we feed our body “junk food”, it will process the junk and send junk to the rest of the body. The result is poor nutrition and eventually poor health. Our body can only process what we feed it!
So it is with our spiritual nature! Our spirit is fed through the eyes and the ears, and our senses. The brain (mind) processes what we feed it and then distributes it to our spirit nature. When we ingest, with our eyes, our ears and our senses, spiritually healthy information, our mind processes it and it becomes a part of our spiritual nature. We become spiritually strong and our love for God and His people grows.
James 4:8 "Draw close to God and He will draw close to you."

Listen Actively
From: In Touch Ministries
1 Samuel 3:10 "... Speak Lord for Your servant is listening."
No person can hear without actively listening. God taught me how, and it is this important lesson that I pass on to you. Heeding the Lord begins when I meditate upon His Word. I listen prayerfully for what He is saying to me through the passage, and I am expectant.
The Lord is not secretive. He clarifies Scripture to those who desire to know its meaning and are willing to abide by it. Often I have to be patient. God reveals His truth when a believer is ready to hear. I continually return to a portion of the Bible until His message to me is clear. Sometimes that means going over the same passage for days at a time.
God will speak with clarity to anyone who listens prayerfully and submissively. He wants to speak to you! His great desire is for you to know Him as intimately as did Moses, David, Paul, and others like them. Dig into the Bible every day, and listen to the words the Lord impresses upon your heart.

Adversity Produces Possibilities
From: PowerPoint Ministries
Philippians 1:12 "I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel."
I know people who are disappointed with the Christian life because they thought faith promised an easy road or that it would exempt them from life's hardships. But faith promises you and me no such thing.
What faith does, however, is help us handle our problems and adversities. Often we can't change our circumstances, but we can change the way we respond to them. In fact, if we live in obedience to God, he'll use adversity to move us forward. God uses adversity to accomplish his will through us!
You see, adversity produces possibilities that we may not see at the time. But God is behind the scenes working creatively and constructively in our lives for his ultimate purposes.
For instance, why would God allow the apostle Paul, who was traveling the world spreading the gospel, to go to prison? While in prison, Paul wrote two-thirds of the New Testament! And concerning his prison experience Paul said, "What has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel."
Don't despise adversity when it comes, but consider how God is at work. Your suffering today may advance the Kingdom tomorrow!

Stay Focused
From: Bayless Conley Ministries
1 Corinthians 9:26 "So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step."
People will innocently divert you from doing what God has called you to do. It is only when you know your purpose that you will not be sidetracked, and you will not be distracted from what you are supposed to do.
The apostle Paul knew his purpose. In fact, he said this, "So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step." He was not about to get distracted from God's purpose for his life.
Our lives are not to be aimless, but they are to have purpose and direction, and we are to stay focused on that purpose, running straight at that goal. Keep focused on the purpose for which God has created you.
Be able to say like Paul, "I am running straight to the goal with purpose in every step."

Higher Levels
From: Joel Osteen Ministries
Deuteronomy 32:11 "As an eagle incites its nestlings forth by hovering over its brood, so he spread his wings to receive them and bore them up on his pinions."
God is always looking to take us to higher levels. He wants us to grow and increase in every area. Change is often a catalyst for growth in our lives, and it keeps up from getting stuck in a rut. To help keep us on our path toward our destiny, God will supernaturally open and close doors of opportunity. He will "stir us" out of comfortable situations and stretch us because He loves us too much to allow us to live in mediocrity.
Do you know how an eaglet learns to fly? That mother eagle will take her eaglet to the very highest point—way out of its comfort zone—and then she just releases it. As the eaglet falls, the mother swoops down and picks it back up again. She does this over and over until the eaglet spreads its wings and soars through the air.
That's what God wants for you today. He wants you to soar in life! You might feel like that eaglet learning to fly, but know that God is right there with you! He is bringing you new times and seasons so that you will rise higher and embrace the very best He has in store for you.

A Wise Listener
From: Boyd Bailey Ministries
Proverbs 31:26 "She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly counsel."
God sends people your way who offer great advice. Therefore, listen intently because you never know who may be speaking on behalf of God. These may be people you trust or distrust. Either way, do not allow pride to stand in your way of listening to what they say. Wisdom can come from the most unlikely sources; therefore, listen with discernment.
So who in your life is currently offering you advice and counsel? Is it your wife? Is it your father or father-in-law? Is it your mother or mother-in-law? Is it your boss? Is it your employee? Is it your friend? Are you truly listening, or are you just going through the motions and not really adjusting or modifying your behavior?
There is a very good chance that the methods you have employed up to now will not propel you into the future. This time of uncertainty may be a good time to evaluate the basics of life and work. What is the purpose? What do you do best? What is your capacity? Do you value quality over quantity? Do relationships have priority over tasks? What is your motive? This honest self-evaluation, coupled with the counsel of others, will help take you to the next level of living.
Moreover, listen to God. He offers clear guidance in the Holy Bible, and many, many times He is speaking directly to you through the advice of people. Do not be afraid to ask someone, “What do you think?” Pray about it and then value them and the Lord by acting on the counsel that you believe is a word from God.
If you do not take the time for wise listening, your life will translate into foolish living. A wise listener listens with a propensity for change. Without change for the better, we become worse. Listen, for He is speaking. This is wise and healthy living. Wise counsel continues for the wise listener, but it ceases for the one who chooses not to listen. We learn when we listen. God is “all about” advice and “all over” a wise listener!

Waking By Faith
From: The Word For Today - Bob Gass
2 Corinthians 5:7 "Walk by faith, not by sight."
Following a plan you didn't devise, to a destination you see in your mind but can't explain, is called 'walking by faith'. God decides the plan, moves you from point A to point B, and says, 'Trust Me; I've got it all worked out.'
In 1945, before he met Billy Graham, Cliff Barrows and his fiancée, Billie, had scraped together enough funds for a simple wedding and two train tickets to a city with a resort hotel. On arrival, however, they found the hotel shut down. Stranded in an unfamiliar city with little money, they hitched a lift. A sympathetic driver took them to a grocery store owned by a woman he knew. The newlyweds spent their first night in a room above the store.
The next day, when the lady overheard Cliff playing Christian songs on his trombone, she arranged for them to spend the rest of their honeymoon at a friend's house. Several days later the host invited them to attend a youth rally where a young evangelist was speaking. The song leader that night was sick, and Cliff was asked to take charge of the music. The young evangelist, of course, was Billy Graham. The two became partners from then on. When things don't go your way, God has plans of His own. Better plans!

Time Is Short
From: Boyd Bailey Ministries
Colossians 4:5-6 “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
What does it mean to redeem the time? It is an attitude that values every minute as a gift from God to be stewarded well. Time is short, as we are only alive a short time. Are we investing our time well?
Without being watchful in how we prioritize our time, we drift into unwise living and miss living out the perfect will of God. It’s easier to execute the expedient, rather than the eternal. What does Jesus think about how you spend your time? Does it fulfill His will for you? If no, then reconsider how to better honor Christ in your career and in your choices.
What open door is before you that invites your entrance? What opportunities has the Lord given you that are waiting for your attention? By faith walk through the open door and prayerfully plan a process to better manage your Master’s opportunities. Fools complain and remain frustrated, while the wise rise to the occasion with fresh faith and fulfilling work. When you use your gifts for God the time will fly by in fruitful living for Him.

The Good Old Days
From: New Life Devotionals - Steve Arterburn
Psalm 42:11 "I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember You. . . . I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!"
In bad times we may get lost in our memories of the "good old days." We may find ourselves struggling with conflicting emotions, teetering between the extremes of depression and hope.
The psalmist reflected these emotions, saying to himself, "My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember You. . . . I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!" (Psalm 42:4-6, 11).
Look how the psalmist improved his conscious contact with God. He talked to himself, commanding his emotions, "I will put my hope in God!" He repeated, "I will praise him again," even though he didn't feel that way right then. In the dark times he sang songs, thought about God's steadfast love, and prayed. We can do these things, too.
We will discover hope when we discard our inabilities for God's infinite ability.

Patience With God
From: Boyd Bailey Ministries
Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Life is normally lived waiting. We wait in lines. A teenager waits for his or her next birthday. We wait for job promotions. We wait for news from the doctor. We wait for the next meal. We wait for our future spouse. We wait for a lawsuit to settle. We wait for a meeting to conclude. We wait for those who have yet to keep their commitment. Every time we turn around we have an opportunity to wait.
Why wait? Most of the time we should wait because that’s what is best for all parties involved. A vegetable gardener is a prisoner to waiting. However, this is seen as an asset not a liability. A tomato is much taster when it is red, large and juicy rather than green, small and hard. The smart gardener will wait for the vegetables to ripen, though He will nurture the soil along the way and keep out the weeds.
There is a waiting cycle that must be completed before there is worthwhile fruit. Even when your waiting is a result of another’s incompetence, you have an opportunity to grow. This holding pattern can facilitate your creativity and resourcefulness. If you did not have to wait, you may have been satisfied with how things have always been done. Now you have the opportunity to think differently.
What a valuable asset we have to wait upon. The Lord God Almighty is worth waiting for. It is worth waiting for His joy, because it comes to uplift us when we are sad in heart. His joy brings a smile to our face. It is worth waiting for His peace that calms our soul when we are worried in mind. His peace allows us to sleep at night. It is worth waiting for His wisdom that provides discernment in our conflicting options.
His wisdom sets our feet on the right path. It is worth waiting for His strength that propels us through our adversity. His strength gives us confidence and perseverance for life’s journey. It is worth waiting for His hope that uplifts us from our despair and depression. His hope keeps the focus on our eternal reward in heaven. He is worth the wait.
Waiting is fundamentally patience with God. After all, He is running the show. He knows what is going on. He knows what is best for you. He knows. He knows. He knows. You can trust Him in your waiting. Use this sabbatical-like time to get to know your heavenly Father more intimately. Waiting is not just a passage to God’s blessing. It is God’s blessing. Wait for the Lord. He is worth the wait!

God's Acoustic Cloak
From: Our Daily Bread Ministries
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Our world has become increasingly noisy. But according to a news report, science has found a way to achieve absolute silence: “Scientists have shown off the blueprint for an ‘acoustic cloak,’ which could make objects impervious to sound waves. The technology, outlined in the New Journal of Physics, could be used to build sound-proof homes, advanced concert halls, or stealth warships.”
When we seek out a quiet place for devotional time with God, we may wish we had an “acoustic cloak.” But even if we could silence all external sound, the internal noises of worry would still reverberate in our minds. We are told: “Be still, and know that I am God.” But how do we calm our hearts in practical terms?
God understands our dilemma and has provided His own “acoustic cloak” to quiet our hearts. It involves exchanging our cares for His peace. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ” (Philippians 4:6-7)
As we place our concerns in God’s capable hands, we find a quietness that only He can provide.

Friends
From: Boyd Bailey Ministries
Proverbs 18:24 “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but a true friend is more loyal than a brother.”
Sometimes friends forget. They forget birthdays, anniversaries, commitments and what’s important to their friends. The forgetfulness of friends facilitates frustration and disappointment. After all, some of these friends have been past recipients of your help and encouragement. You have been there for them during their days of discouragement. Now when the tables have turned and you are in need, but they don’t seem to be near.
Maybe they are too busy with life, maybe they are buried in their own troubles, or maybe they have simply forgotten you. Unfortunately, some friendships are tentative and unpredictable. When adversity strikes you are able to filter out false friends from forever friends. Fair weather friends will fly in and out of your life. Some friendships are expedient for the moment, while others compound in loyalty and love as the years pass.
However, be careful to not place expectations on your friends. Expectations increase the chances for disappointment. A friend will let you down if you hold over them lofty expectations. If your friend feels the pressure to perform a certain way they will push back in fear or resentment. Friendships are meant for release—not control.
Friends are a gift from Christ. Steward them well, so you can be trusted with more. It is tempting to take our friends for granted. Especially long term friendships, because they are low maintenance and they tend to get the least attention. But, in reality even old friends need nurturing. They need a phone call, a visit or written correspondence. They need time. Friendships grow or atrophy, but care and attention fertilize a friendship.
Am I a friend worthy of friendship? What friend do I need to love on and encourage?
