Scripture Teaches Agape Love

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is inspired by God, and is useful for teaching - for reproof, correction, and training in holiness so that the man of God may be fully competent and equipped for every good work."

Every time I open the Bible I can hear God, in my spirit, saying, "Hello Bobby, how are you partner? How can I help you today?"

"Scripture is God's unique self-revelation. When one opens the Book, one opens one's heart and it is God who speaks. God dialogues with whoever reads the Bible, which requires serious study and powerful reflection. Scripture describes how Jesus fits into God's plan for the world and how we need to live."

Studying Scripture helps us to understand "agape" love...Christ's love for us and how we are to love Him and our neighbors. "If I have faith great enough to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." (1 Corinthians 13:2)

The Word of God is "sweeter than honey that drips from the comb." (Psalm 19:10). "Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105), but it is also "something alive and active: it cuts more incisively than any two-edged sword: it can seek out the place where soul is divided from spirit, or joints from marrow; it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12).

"We must translate the Word we have heard into gestures of love in order to reflect the Gospel proclamation."

Have you read your Bible today?

Don't Leave God Out Of The Conversation

http://tinyurl.com/dkfoel

Andy Stanley follows up his message last week on the deterioration of our nation's "collective conscience" in terms of morals and values with another bull's-eye Biblical warning to America: Don't leave God out of the conversation!

Just like the warning to His chosen people before they entered the "land of milk and honey", God's Word reminds us that our ability to acquire wealth and enjoy immense prosperity is graciously given to us through His power...but: "Be careful not to forget the Lord, your God, by neglecting His commandments and decrees and statutes. If you forget the Lord, your God, and follow other gods, serving and worshipping them, I forewarn you this day you will perish utterly. Like the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so shall you too perish for not heeding the voice of the Lord, your God." (Deuteronomy 8:11,19-20)

Abortion is the most heartbreaking example of neglecting His commandments and..."Lukewarm" Christians (Catholic and Protestant)...please read Revelation 3:16-22.

What We Think About Is Important

From: Greg Laurie Ministries

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things."

In Philippians 4:8, the apostle Paul gives us an extensive list of thing that we should focus our thoughts on:

Another translation puts it this way: “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse” (the message).

What we think about ultimately affects what we do. Therefore, we must nip in the bud any thoughts that are impure, spiritually harmful, or that feed the beast of worry.

This means refusing to play the “What If” game, driving yourself to despair.

You remember the first temptation, when Satan came to Eve in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3:1 says, “Now the Serpent was more Cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

He did not introduce himself by saying, “Hi, I’m the Devil, the enemy of God, and I have come to ruin, destroy, and pull you into hell with me and my demons!” He may be wicked, but he isn’t stupid!

When the Devil comes to us, he comes with subtlety, snake-like, slithering in when you least expect it. That’s why we need to keep our guard up at all times.

"In God We Trust"

Romans 2: 15-16 "They show that the demands of the law are written on their hearts. Their conscience bears witness together with that law, and their thoughts will accuse or defend them on the day when, in accordance with the Gospel I preach, God will pass judgment on the secrets of men through Christ Jesus."

Andy Stanley, pastor of one of the largest and fastest growing mega churches in the South, gives a powerful and certainly relevant message that strikes at the heart of where America has gone astray with its collective conscience. This is a great illustration of how our society's "natural law" foundation has been numbed by a long term degradation of morals and values.

For those of you who may know Andy, it's no surprise to you of his immense communicative skills and passion for following Biblical principles. Andy would be a great example of my argument for an ecumenical effort to advance the Pro-Life Movement.

Please take time to listen to this 30-35 minute message. It is well worth your time...if you are concerned about the direction our Country's leaders are taking us.

What Is Your Brand?

From: Today God Is First - Os Hillman Ministries

Psalm 89:35 "I will not violate my covenant; the promise of my lips I will not alter."

Coca-Cola is the number one "brand" in the world. Companies spend millions of dollars making their brands known in business. They want you to recognize their brand. When you think of their brand they hope you will have positive thoughts in hopes it will influence your next purchasing decision.

Every individual has a personal "brand" whether you want it or not. Cultures have a brand. Ethnic groups have a brand. Your brand is defined by your conduct. If you are always late, you'll soon develop a brand or reputation for being late. Others will even show up late because they know you will be late. If you are a person who exaggerates the truth, others will soon fail to take you serious.

However, the opposite can also be true. Your brand can be incredibly positive. By being a man or woman of your word, who is consistent in dealing fairly and honestly with others, your brand becomes known as someone who is faithful in all aspects of life.

One of God's most important characteristics is His faithfulness. Faithfulness means one is true to fulfilling their promises to others in the time which was committed. God is faithful to fulfill all His promises to His children.

What is your brand among your peers? Is it a positive brand or does it need improvement? Allowing the Lord to make us more like Jesus is the only way our brand becomes trustworthy.

God Knows Our Hearts

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries - Dave Branon

Matthew 15:8 "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me."

The caller to the radio program mentioned religion, so the radio talk show host began to rant about hypocrites. “I can’t stand religious hypocrites,” he said. “They talk about religion, but they’re no better than I am. That’s why I don’t like all this religious stuff.”

This man didn’t realize it, but he was agreeing with God. God has made it clear that He can’t stand hypocrisy either. It’s ironic, though, that something God opposes is used by some people as an excuse not to seek Him.

Jesus said this about hypocrisy: “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:8-9).

Notice what Jesus said to perhaps the biggest hypocrites of His day, the Pharisees. In Matthew 23, He called them hypocrites—not once, not twice, but seven times! They were religious people who were putting on a big show, but God knew their hearts. He knew they were far from Him.

Non-Christians who point out hypocrisy in us when they see it are right in doing so. They are agreeing with God, who also despises it. Our task is to make sure our lives honor the One who deserves our total dedication.

Determined Purpose

From: Greg Laurie Ministries

Philippians 3:8 "Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord."

What is your determined purpose in life? Everyone has one. Some of us declare it, and others of us just practice it.

But we all have something that is our purpose in life—something that gets us up in the morning, something we live for, something we would even be willing to die for.

The Apostle Paul’s determined purpose was to know the Lord. Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7–8).

Paul recognized the wonder of becoming more intimately acquainted with Him. God can be known. Not completely grasped. Not completely understood. But at the same time, God can be known in a personal and a very real way.

What a great purpose in life. I hope it’s yours.

Guard The Gate Of Your Heart And Mind

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries

Ephesians 4:27 "Do not give the devil a chance to work on you."

In journalism, the term gatekeeper refers to reporters, editors, and publishers who consider various news items and determine which stories are newsworthy. Some long-time news professionals warn that the Internet allows information to get through without being checked at the gate.

In Old Testament times, gatekeepers guarded the temple to prevent those who were unclean from entering (2 Chron. 23:19). In 70 A.D., the temple was destroyed by the Roman armies of Emperor Titus. But the destruction began years earlier when the Levites assigned to guard it failed to do so after coming under the corrupt influence of the Syrian King Antiochus IV.

Paul called our bodies God’s “temple” (1 Cor. 3:16-17), and many forces are at work to assault God’s new dwelling. Evil may gain a foothold through unfortified areas of our spiritual life—places where envy, strife, or divisions may undermine us (3:3). Each of us must be on guard and: "Do not give the devil a chance to work on you."

The criteria for what may enter is found in Philippians 4:8—whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy. The resulting peace will guard the gate of our hearts and minds. - Julie Ackerman Link

Great Attitude

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries

John 3:30 "He must increase, but I must decrease."

A music professor with a well-trained voice usually sang the major male solo parts in the choir of a large church. A young man named Bob who had no training sometimes took a few shorter solos. As the choir director prepared for the Christmas cantata, she felt that Bob’s voice and style made him a natural for the lead role. However, she didn’t know how she could give it to him without offending the older man.

Her anxiety was unnecessary. The professor had the same thoughts as she did, and he told her that Bob should take the part. He continued to sing faithfully in the chorus and was a source of much encouragement to Bob.

People who can set aside selfish ambition and genuinely seek the good of others have an attitude that pleases God. Do you remember how John the Baptist reacted when the crowds left him and began following Jesus? He said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

What did John the Baptist and the music professor have in common? They were able to set aside “selfish ambition.” They were happy to see others elevated above themselves when it was for the common good. Can the same be said about us? - Herbert Vander Lugt

"Open The Eyes Of My Heart Lord"

From: The Word For Today - Bob Gass Ministries

Ephesians 1:18 "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened."

When you are in a crisis it's easy to lose perspective. It happened to Jesus' disciples on the Emmaus Road. Discouraged about His death, they were "going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their… questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. But they were not able to recognize who He was" (Luke 24:15-16).When you take your eyes off Jesus you begin to feel helpless about things.

Dr. Michael Youssef says, "Facing a major crisis… I tend to be the kind of person whose vision becomes blurred… my perceptions are shot… my contemplations one-sided… and I often shut out the very people who can deliver me… just like these two disciples… Their vision was blurred about the very person who was walking with them and talking to them. The One whose death they were mourning was alive… but they didn't realise it because their focus was on the wrong thing."

But everything changed the minute they recognized Him. "Within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There… the two… told… how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized Him as He was breaking the bread" (Luke 24:33-35).

Notice the words "within the hour". In an instant they went from fear to courage, from pain to joy, and from despair to hope. And that's the story of Easter. No matter how bad things may appear to be, when you set your eyes on Jesus He will fill you with hope. So Paul writes: "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened… that you may know the great hope to which He has called you" (Ephesians 1:18).

Is The Devil Real?

Today's message is a response to a question from one of my LinkedIn contacts.

"I believe that many of the travails of both America and the Church currently stem from people who are spending too much time arguing details and policy, and not enough time understanding the truth of the founding principles upon which all else depends. Instead of arguing specifics of policy positions, we would be better served returning to our founding principles and building from there. Only then can we make correct decisions based on “the truth” So here is my question...Is the Devil Real?"

Michael, You are hitting at the core of America's problem partner.

"If you live according to My teaching, you are truly My disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32).

One of the most effective weapons the "father of lies" uses is divisiveness. Just look at how many Christians so often vehemently argue with each other over differences of opinion.

Mahatma Gandhi is said to have studied Christianity intensely but declined to become a follower of Christ because he, "knew so many Christians who were so unlike Christ."

Christians spend so much time and energy debating the differences among Catholics and Protestants that the common focus and beliefs are somehow diminished and marginalized. We then become a vulnerable target for the enemy.

Matthew quotes Jesus in his Gospel, "A kingdom torn by strife is headed for its downfall. A household split into factions cannot last for long." (12:25), and later, "He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters." (12:30).

Is the devil real? You bet... "Stay sober and alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8).

This is how we fight the enemy...

Paul says we are engaged in Christian warfare and we must, "Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. Our battle is not against human forces but against the principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above. You must put on the armor of God if you are to resist on the evil day; do all that your duty requires and hold your ground." (Ephesians 6:11-13).

Every evil in this world is the result of satan's activities. We must pray constantly to our Lord that He will prevent the liar from corrupting our lives and the lives of all people around the world. "In all circumstances hold faith up before you as your shield; it will help you extinguish the fiery darts of the devil." (Ephesians 6:16).

Once we allow the Holy Spirit to indwell in our hearts (love God and love your neighbor), we can then have the confidence of knowing that, "Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1 John 4:4) and ,"No weapon formed against you shall prevail." (Isaiah 54:17).

Today we celebrate the irrefutable evidence that we as true followers of Christ can be assured the outcome of the war is already decided...and WE WIN! Thanks be to God. Alleluia!

Happy Easter!

Don't Be "Lukewarm"

Psalm 14:1-2 "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'" Such are corrupt; they do abominable deeds; there is not one who does good. The Lord looks down from Heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be one who is wise and seeks God."

It's Easter...and Christianity is under attack. What else is new? The cover of Newsweek says we are at "The End of Christian America." Are we?

President Obama tells Islamic Turkey that the United States is not a Christian nation: "One of the great strengths of the United States is that it does not consider itself a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values." What values would that be Mr. President?

The University of Maryland student council just voted to ban invocations at graduation ceremonies but welcomes pornographic films on campus. President Obama vows to expand the laws permitting the indiscriminate murder of over 3500 babies a day as soon as possible! Millions of Christians voted for Obama. Does Newsweek have a point?

Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote yesterday on his blog: "The controversy over the President's remarks in this context are misplaced. There is indeed a controversy over whether it is appropriate to call America a Christian nation in the sense that Americans would even make such a claim --but the context in Turkey and the Muslim world is very different. Do American Christians really believe that Christianity benefits by being associated with all that America represents in the Muslim world? To many Muslims, America appears as the great fountain of pornography, debased entertainments, abortion, and sexual revolution. Does it help our witness to Christ that all this would be associated in the Muslim mind with "Christian" America?"

Despite the "enemy's" recent worldly victories, true Christians know who ultimately wins the war that counts.

In this climate of social, political and economic turmoil, now is the time for all Christians (Catholic and Protestant) to come together in prayer: "If My people, upon whom My name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek My presence and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from Heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Get involved...in addition to prayer, write your representatives at the State and National levels, encourage your Priests and Pastors to speak out against the secular attacks on our faith...and very important...encourage one another, the Christian faithful. We are all in this together. We need each other. "The eyes of the Lord roam over the whole earth, to encourage those who are devoted to Him wholeheartedly." (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Remember "God makes all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28).

Blessings,

Bobby

Your Calling

From: Today God Is First - Os Hillman Ministries

Genesis 41:38 "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the Spirit of God?"

I often get resumes` from people wanting to come to work for us. They think that because we are a Christian organization the pressures and the environment will be so much better than the place where they work. That may be true, but there is a danger in this view.

The Bible says that God has defined the place and time in which we are to live. "Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance" (Ps 16:5-6).

God has uniquely gifted you to bring His presence and power in the area of your calling. Once you begin to realize this, God will use you just as He did Joseph with his employer, Pharaoh. Your life should be a testimony of the power, creativity, and servant-hood of Jesus that it impacts your employer to the degree that he says the same thing Pharaoh said about Joseph: "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the Spirit of God?"

When God accomplishes this in your life He gives you authority in your workplace. You will begin to see others drawn to you. You may begin to be ostracized as well. This too is part of your call. Do not fear this. Embrace it.

We should not be seeking to remove ourselves from the pressure cooker of life, but use that pressure cooker to reveal the power and grace of God through our lives to others. It is here that we will receive our inheritance as we fulfill our purposes in and through our work life call.

Today, ask God to give you supernatural wisdom and discernment to express the Spirit of God through you to your employer.

Time To Go "ALL IN"

Joshua 24:15 "If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve....As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."

Since the Reformation there has never been an issue better suited to bring unity among Catholics and Protestants. "What the 'enemy' has meant for harm, God will turn it to good to achieve His purpose." (Genesis 50:20)

Since the beginning of time, abortion is the most heinous act ever enacted by man...as a result of Roe V. Wade, over 3500 "innocent, helpless children" are murdered in the US...every 24 hours, 365 days a year. Don't you think God is trying to tell us something...Church?

"To true Christians (Catholic and Protestant), abortion is the killing of an unborn child, a premeditated breach of God’s Commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” The case is closed for all time. Any Catholics who participate in an abortion are excommunicated . Catholic politicians from Nancy Pelosi to Joe Biden who support a “woman’s right to choose” have been denounced from pulpits and denied Communion.

Obama, however, is the most pro-abortion president ever. On his third day in office, by executive order, he repealed the Bush prohibition against using tax dollars to fund agencies abroad that perform abortions.

He supports partial-birth abortion, where a baby’s soft skull is sliced open with scissors in the birth canal and its brains sucked out to ease its passage, a procedure Sen. Pat Moynihan said “comes as close to infanticide as anything I have seen in our judiciary.”

In the Illinois legislature, Obama helped block the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, a bill to save the lives of infant survivors of abortion. He voted to allow doctors and nurses to let these tiny babies die of neglect and be tossed out with the medical waste.

Barack is committed to signing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which would repeal every federal and state restriction on abortion. He has smoothed the path for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research"....excerpts from an article by Pat Buchanan

Obama's position is not surprising given his incomprehensible thought process..."I will teach my daughters morals and values, but if they were to make a mistake, I do not want them to be punished with a baby." "Punished"...This is a comment from the leader of the free world and frankly is satanic on its face.

Yes we need to respect the office of the Presidency and pray for Barack Obama who is obviously poorly educated and shockingly uninformed with respect to God's laws. By the way, we should never underestimate the power of prayer...millions of Catholics and Protestants praying together for the same purpose could be an awesome thing. That said, let him show up and speak at Notre Dame...but let us Christians use this opportunity to speak up for God and his little children.

Let the "lukewarm" wake up and get fired up.

It's time to go "ALL IN" for God.

Blessings,

Bobby

Humility And Greatness

From: Our Daily Bread Ministries

Matthew 20:26 "Whoever aspires to greatness must serve the rest."

As a 7-year-old, Richard Bernstein admired Jackie Robinson’s athletic ability and courage as the first African-American man to play Major League baseball in the modern era. A few years later, while working at a small-town golf course, Bernstein was astonished to find himself carrying the bag of his hero, Jackie Robinson. When rain postponed the game, Robinson held an umbrella over the two of them and shared his chocolate bar with the young caddy. Writing in The International Herald Tribune, Bernstein cited that humble act of kindness as a mark of greatness he has never forgotten.

True greatness is shown by humility, not pride. This was powerfully demonstrated and taught by Jesus Christ, who told His ambitious disciples: “Whoever aspires to greatness must serve the rest and whoever desires to be first among you must serve the needs of all. The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matt. 20:26-28).

When God Himself walked on earth as a man, He washed feet, welcomed children, and willingly gave His life to deliver us from the self-centered tyranny of sin. His example gives credence to His command. — David C. McCasland

A Critical Time

From: Greg Laurie Ministries

Ephesians 6:12 "Our battle is not against human forces but against the principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above."

We are living in a critical time right now. I think all of us agree that the devil is working overtime. He knows his days are numbered. He knows his judgment is sure.

Thus, he is doing everything he can to wreak havoc until the day he faces his judgment. That’s why we need to get busy—because every battle counts, every day is important.

It’s time to put our armor on, but first we need to cast off the works of darkness. Be done with the compromising life. Be done with trying to live in both worlds. Let's suit up. Let's get busy.

I don’t want to frighten you with this warfare rhetoric and make you think you are going to be overwhelmed out there. It is true that there is a devil who tries to trip us up, but it is also true that our commander-in-chief will lead us to victory if we stay close to Him. Remember, “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47).

The battle cry, the cry of victory went forth from the cross when Jesus hung there with the nails in His hands and feet and He cried out, “ ‘It is finished!’ ” Those three words reverberated through heaven and hell. I’m sure every demon heard them.

So now I can stand in the victorious strength of Jesus. I can fight for Him as He works through me, marching on, taking ground for the kingdom.

The Jesus Filter

Matthew 7:26-27 "Anyone who hears My words but does not put them into practice is like the foolish man who built his house on sandy ground. The rains fell, the torrents came, the winds blew and lashed against the house. It collapsed under all this and was completely ruined."

Mother Teresa, known for her works of charity with the poorest of the poor, was invited by President Bill Clinton to speak at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast. I'm sure Clinton was unprepared for what she said.

"And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want." Mother Teresa

Obviously, Mother Teresa's words were meaningless to Clinton. He vetoed a law passed by Congress to ban partial birth abortion not once but twice...in 1995 and 1997. Fortunately President Bush who was Pro-Life then and now, signed the law in 2003.

We are now heading down that same old satanic led path with President Obama's pledge to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). FOCA is a proposed federal law that would nullify virtually every state and federal law and policy that in any way limits access to abortion, including parental notification laws and the ban on partial-birth abortion. May God give us the courage, wisdom and strength to repel this attack on America. "Your opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8)

I propose we use the Jesus filter...always. Is it ok with Jesus? Whatever I do, whatever I say, is it ok with Jesus? And for those times I forget to check with Jesus first, I will at days end commit to always reflect on my words and actions through an examination of my conscience.

Wow! What if politicians voted as if Jesus was by their side advising them on their vote. Jesus, should I vote to allow abortion on demand, without any limits?

Pray For America And Her Leaders

From: In Touch Ministries

2 Chronicles 7:14 "If My people, upon whom My name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek My presence and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from Heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land."

If you received a call that someone you loved was stricken with a serious illness, you would not whisper a quick, “Bless her, Lord” and move on. No! You would fall to your knees—heart heavy in your chest—pleading with God to restore her health. We should respond similarly when our country’s “health” is compromised: we should pray as fervently for our land and her leaders as we would for a dangerously ill friend.

King Solomon was warned of the peril to his nation if the people ceased honoring the Lord. God explained what Israel was to do in such a state of turmoil. First, the people were to humbly admit their need for the Lord’s intervention. Second, they were expected to cry out to Him from hearts burdened for the country’s situation. And third, those seeking a renewal of God’s blessing upon Israel were to undergo a time of personal confession and repentance.

The Lord’s word to Israel contains principles that are also relevant for us in modern times. “Those who are called by His name”—in other words, the body of believers—have a duty to intercede on behalf of their country when it is ailing. Christians who want God to hear prayers, forgive national sins, and heal their homeland are wise to follow the steps He laid out to Solomon.

All It Requires Is Character

From: The Purpose Driven Life Ministries

Mark 10:43 “Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.”

The world defines greatness in terms of power, possessions, prestige, and position. If you can demand service from others, you’ve arrived. In our self-serving culture with its “me first” mentality, acting like a servant is not a popular concept.

Jesus, however, measured greatness in terms of service, not status. God determines your greatness by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you.

This is so contrary to the world’s idea of greatness that we have a hard time understanding it, much less practicing it. The disciples argued about who deserved the most prominent position, and 2,000 years later, Christian leaders still jockey for position and prominence in churches, denominations, and parachurch ministries.

Thousands of books have been written on leadership, but few on servanthood. Everyone wants to lead; no one wants to be a servant. We would rather be generals than privates. Even Christians want to be “servant-leaders,” not just plain servants. But to be like Jesus is to be a servant. That’s what he called Himself.

While knowing your shape is important for serving God, having the heart of a servant is even more important. Remember, God shaped you for service, not for self-centeredness. Without a servant’s heart, you will be tempted to misuse your shape for personal gain. You will also be tempted to use it as an excuse to exempt yourself from meeting some needs.

God often tests our hearts by asking us to serve in ways we’re not shaped. If you see a man fall into a ditch, God expects you to help him out, not say, “I don’t have the gift of mercy or service.”

While you may not be gifted for a particular task, you may be called to do it if no one who is gifted at it is around. Your primary ministry should be in the area of your shape, but your secondary service is wherever you’re needed at the moment.

Your shape reveals your ministry, but your servant’s heart will reveal your maturity. No special talent or gift is required to stay after a meeting to pick up trash or stack chairs. Anyone can be a servant. All it requires is character.
