Psalm 119:105 "Your word is
a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
When the power goes out at night in my house, I go staggering to where we keep a candle, bumping into things all the way. When I finally get the candle in my hand and light it, everything is clear and obvious and I feel silly for having bumped into things on the way.
But that candle wouldn’t help me at all if I just picked it up and kept it with me without using it. I would still be stumbling around. I have to light it to make it useful.
In the same way, God’s Word makes the things of life clear and obvious; it sheds the light of God’s perspective on my life. I can then see which way I should be going. When we finally shine God’s light on our lives we can see clearly and we can deal with the obstacles in our path.
